Yet Method 3
(Friday)
This week we looked at your view of the learning process.
In addition, we highlighted the importance of being patient with yourself and viewing failure as an important and necessary part of learning, both of which contribute to a growth mindset.
Using the simple method of acknowledging we don’t know something ‘yet’ allows us to remove any pressure or stress of learning at a specified rate.
Hopefully, you’ve done the metacognitive work and are now very aware of how you view the learning process both in and out of school.
Feel free to complete the metacognitive review below.
Life hacks to improve and enjoy learning.
Learn from the mistakes of others. Watch and learn what to do, or not do, from others.
Listen to advice from people who are successful, or who enjoy learning things.
Have at least one hobby.
Be curious
Be passionate
Help others
Teach others
The last four hacks are extremely powerful when combined. When you are curious about how to help someone, your desire to help, to solve a problem, or change a situation, can become your passion. In time you may want to share your passion with others. Combined, being curious, and passionate about helping and teaching others can make learning an easy and enjoyable activity.
Do you have a hobby? Are you in a club? Do you have a passion? What do you like to teach others?
Write your response to the questions above in your journal along with your observations from this week’s metacognitive assignment.
Remember: Everything you know at this moment had to be learned. Everything. Just think of all you have already learned, and will learn in your future!
When you feel frustrated learning something, just remember, you will eventually understand it. You just don’t understand it yet.
STEPS FOR CHANGE
-
Be patient with yourself. Not everyone learns in the same way or at the same pace. Even if the current educational system wants you to believe that.
-
Understand that just because something is difficult or hard, doesn’t make you slow or unintelligent. Some things are just challenging. Putting together a 200-piece puzzle is hard. It will take time to make all the pieces fit. The fact that the task will be challenging and will take time, does not reflect negatively on you!
-
Using the YET method allows your mind to acknowledge the fact that you will eventually reach your goal. Knowing that you can reach your goal will help you maintain a positive view of yourself and the learning process. Maintaining a positive view of yourself and the learning process are keys to being successful in the workplace and in life.
Thought of the day.
Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.
