Growth Mindset 3

(Friday)

This week we looked at your view of your ability to grow, learn and improve.

In addition, we highlighted the importance of being patient with yourself and viewing failure as an important and necessary part of learning, both of which contribute to a growth mindset.

Remember:

Talent and skill do not guarantee success. Hard work is required to be successful.

A growth mindset means that you believe:

  • You can get smarter

  • Learn new things

  • You believe that your abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point.

This view creates a love of learning and resilience that is essential for great accomplishments.

To develop a growth mindset:

1) Consciously listen to your self-talk and tail-enders. Become aware of your self-talk so you can change it’s if necessary.

2) Adopt the YET mentality. Realize that learning and growing is a gradual, progressive process. Just like climbing a mountain, or saving up for something you want to buy, learning anything is something you do gradually (see the Yet Method lesson).

Feel free to complete the metacognitive review below.

The benefits of a Growth Mindset.

  • Additional benefits of a growth mindset include:

    • Reduced burnout.

    • Fewer psychological problems, such as depression and anxiety.

    • Fewer behavioral problems.

    • Significantly higher motivation and enjoyment in learning.

Do those sound like benefits that you would like to enjoy? Do you currently benefit from a growth mindset?

One step at a time.

If you’ve ever gone hiking, you know that the way to reach the top is taking one step at a time. It will also take hard work, effort, endurance, and patience.

In this video, we introduce you to another way to keep in mind that learning is gradual.

Watch the video.

Remember: We all learn differently. So try different learning techniques. Use whatever helps.

Remember: Growth mindset is an attitude! It’s a never give up, never give in attitude. It’s an anything is possible mindset. Do you have it?

When you feel frustrated learning something, just remember, you will eventually understand it. You just don’t understand it yet.

Remember: Replace the word “failing” with the word “learning”. Each mistake is an opportunity to learn from. Each time you think you fail is a chance to start again smarter than before.

STEPS FOR CHANGE

  • Listen to your ‘tail enders’. Your thoughts will often tell you more about yourself if you listen. When you are faced with a challenge, listen to what your mind says, “I can do this.”, “This is going to take some work.”, or “This is too hard, I should just give up.”

  • Understand that just because something is difficult or hard, doesn’t make you slow or unintelligent. Some things are just challenging. Putting together a 200-piece puzzle is hard. It will take time to make all the pieces fit. The fact that the task will be challenging and will take time, does not reflect negatively on you!

  • Develop a good work ethic. This doesn’t mean that you have to push until you burn out. It means you know how to focus, get things done, and don’t procrastinate. Some of the most successful entrepreneurs attribute their work ethic to their incredible success.

Thought of the day.

When you prioritize approval over learning, you sacrifice your own potential for growth. Don’t worry about others’ approval. Just learn.
